For those who don’t know, Game of Thrones is an HBO fantasy series, an adaptation of a series of novels written by George R. R. Martin. It has just been renewed for its fourth season in 2014. It takes place on fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, but is actually filmed in Northern Ireland.  The story follows the lives of several noble families during a civil war. Even though it is a fantasy show, it covers the always controversial subjects of religion, sexuality, crime, and social structure. It is credited with bringing fantasy to the mainstream.

The series has attracted a number of fans in social media. According to statistics, there are over five million fans on Facebook and Twitter with more being added each day. Here are some interesting statistics about these people and what they have to say about this popular series.

A third of fans are from the United States with Brazil having the second highest following. The United Kingdom is in third place. The U.S. also has the highest buzz on Twitter for the show with Canada right behind. The UK is once again in third place.

The character who gets the most attention is Jon Snow with Daenerys Targaryen following in a distant second. Right behind her is Joffrey Bartheon, Tyrion L. Annister, and Robb Stark.

The show has created a huge fan base that is both international and diverse. It has been critically acclaimed and won numerous awards with even more nominations. It is no wonder that social media fans have created a buzz about the show. The question might be asked if social media is responsible at least partially for the success of the show or if it is the success that has created the fan base on social networks.
