Sports enthusiasts who like to keep an accurate record of their progress will have some new smart gadgets at their disposal as of this year, as TomTom is entering the fitness products market with two GPS smart watches specifically designed to help athletes get the perfect training.

The Dutch automotive navigation systems manufacturer is launching its own line of sports watches, after it previously worked with Nike on the Nike+ Sportwatch GPS. The first gadgets in the series are called TomTom Multisport and Runner and present several similarities with the Nike watch, but various distinguishing features as well.

TomTom Launches Own GPS Sports Watches

TomTom’s GPS sports watches are significantly slimmer and easier to wear than other similar products, being 0.4 inches (11.5mm) thick and their face measuring 0.87×1 inch (22x25mm). They also boast the one-button control technology, which makes it easier to navigate between menus. The button is large enough to be operated even with your gloves on.

As their names indicate, the TomTom GPS gadgets are specifically designed for runners and for those practicing various other sports. TomTom Runner Watch tracks data such as running speed, the distance you run and the time it takes you. Its built-in sensor can also track your pace and steps on a treadmill. The Multisport watch has all these attributes and adds special features for cycling and swimming. It measures strokes, laps, distance, time and speed. The watches come with various optional accessories, such as a Bluetooth heart rate monitor or a cadence sensor.

The watches do not transmit their data via Bluetooth, but through an USB cable. You can download your progress into your computer and then upload it on several fitness sites for analysis. Both gadgets are waterproof, being able to withstand depths of 164 feet (50 meters). Battery life lasts about ten hours.

The two watches are expected to be available for purchase this summer. TomTom has yet to announce pricing details. Fitness watches on the market currently range between $100 and $250.
