This five minute video written and directed by Gary Turk has taken the internet by storm, as it urges all of us to “look up from your phone, shut down the display, take in your surroundings and make the most of today”. Its message has divided opinion, with some labeling it as brilliant, whereas others don’t take kindly to the irony that a viral video was used to order people to stop using social media.

One YouTube user commented saying: “Obviously the sole purpose of this video is to go viral and garner as much controversy and therefore Ad$ense revenue as possible in your 5 seconds of internet fame,” the comment read. “The hypocrisy is painful. Keep your straw men, we’ll keep our technology thanks.”

Even Turk himself admits in the video: “I’m guilty too of being part of this machine, this digital world where we are heard but not seen.”

Although it does seem ironic, in a world where everyone uses technology and social media, if you really want to get a message across and reach lots of people, how else would you do it? The video has obviously struck a chord with people because it has been viewed just under 32,000 times since its release on April 25th.

Despite the video being a little over sentimental, unplugging from time to time certainly has its benefits but the reality we all have to face is that technology is part of our lives and its not going away. So while Turk makes a small fortune from his viral video, at least its given us all food for thought.
