Activision wants players transitioning from the previous generation to the current generation of consoles to continue their Destiny journey, without dropping another cent on the game.
If a customer buys a digital copy of Destiny on the Xbox 360 or PS3, they will be able to download the Destiny version of the Xbox One or PS4 for free. This will only be available for digital copies, as they are tied to the user’s account, and users of PS3 cannot download the Xbox One version, or vice versa.
This does seem like a nice update and one we can see Activision pulling a few more times, as they look to keep customers transitioning from the Xbox 360 and PS3 to the Xbox One and PS4 happy.
The new feature will allow players to start exactly where they left off, with all of their items and levels updated on the new console. Any DLC bought on Destiny will be ported over to the new console, without having to pay for anything extra.
Destiny is available on all consoles, apart from Nintendo’s Wii and Wii U. It will not be available on PC at launch, and Bungie appears to not be interested in the PC platform, hopefully Activision will push for the fifth platform launch before 2015, although we wouldn’t bank on it.
Bungie is looking to make this a ten year franchise, filled with content in the later stages. This might make the transition between past and current generation even more worthwhile, if players put hundreds of hours into the game on Xbox 360 or PS3.
The inclusion of DLC is another perk, all too often developers and publishers have made customers pay twice for the DLC and offer no promotional sales on the DLC for previous owners, but now with the digital passport, they are capable of tracking who has paid for the content.
