I went to Egypt with my wife on our 2nd anniversary.  It was an amazing place but we were unable to take a trip to the Pyramids.  This was our one regret about the trip!  However, Google has just announced this week that it has brought its street view technology to one of the world’s most iconic archaeological sites.  Egypt is home to the Pyramids of Giza, the sphinx and many other surviving relics of that ancient civilisation.  Now you can view these relics in all their glory via a computer or laptop.

Pyramids of Giza

Google stated, “Now the Egypt of your imagination can be brought to life with new Street View imagery in Google Maps, and you can take a virtual walk among the stunning monuments and rich history of this ancient civilization.”

Now anyone can visit these wonders.  The pyramids of Giza, the sphinx and even the burial ground of Saqqara can be seen virtually anywhere in the world!  Users can explore the areas without ever having to leave the comfort of their own homes.

Amita Khattri. Google Maps Street View programme manager stated that the project took 10 days to photograph.  Although it was an amazing experience, the team ran into particular problems because of the Egyptian summer.  Khattri stated, “It was a unique experience for us as well, because the equipment really got tested in the heat.”

This project launched in Indonesia a few weeks ago and is the most recent project for Google.  Mapping software has come a long way especially for Google Street View.  It first started in 2007 and is used in over 59 countries around the world.
