Nokia is back in the hardware business. After selling its mobile division to Microsoft for $7.2 billion, many thought that was the end of Nokia, but the services division has revealed the N1 Android tablet.

Considering Nokia was shackled to Windows Phone for so long, its no surprise the services division, who reportedly worked on the Z Launcher for mobile and tablet, want to move to the more popular mobile OS. The Nokia N1 has a lot of similarities to the iPad Mini. The 7.9-inch 2048 x 1536 resolution is exactly the same as the iPad Mini 2 and it has the same sort of build back and front – the only difference being the home button on the iPad.

Internally, the Nokia N1 is running an 2.4GHz Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and 5400mAh battery. Nokia will only offer a WiFi version with Bluetooth 4.0 – no LTE, as part of the agreement with Microsoft.

Nokia will start sales of the N1 Android tablet in China, starting at $249. It will be available in black or grey aluminium and will only offer one storage size. Nokia has expressed interest in bringing the N1 to Europe and the U.S., although this may take some time.

The deal with Microsoft – in terms of licensing – was to not develop a mobile device until 2016 under the Nokia brand. Nokia also rented out its name to Microsoft for ten years, but it looks like Redmond does not want the brand name, sticking with Lumia instead for mobile.
