Calibre ebook library management software is some of the most well-known and widely used freeware for converting documents and ebooks to a variety of formats for different reading devices. While self-published authors have long been cautioned against using Calibre as a means to format their books for retail upload since the output is a little oversimplified, it’s still a great tool for morphing your own reading material into desktop, laptop, tablet, or e-reader consumption.
One major complaint about Calibre is that it’s just not as intuitive as some users would like, but upon installation users are prompted to a host of resources, including instructional websites and streaming videos of the best way to take advantage of its features.
According to the developers, “Calibre is a one stop solution to your e-book needs. It is free, open source and cross-platform in design. Calibre is meant to be a complete e-library solution and thus includes library management, format conversion, news feeds to e-book conversion, as well as e-book reader sync features and an integrated e-book viewer. Calibre’s features include: library management; format conversion (all major ebook formats); syncing to e-book reader devices; fetching news from the Web and converting it into ebook form; viewing many different e-book formats; giving you access to your book collection over the internet using just a browser.”
In this latest update for the Mac version, the publisher handled a few bug fixes–like the print-to-PDF not working with all systems–but also addressed a common question from users: what about Word docx files? Now, all ebook file types can be converted to Word docs for the latest Word versions. Even more important, this update will now convert tables, images, lists, embedded fonts, and other specialty features of documents that used to be pesky during a conversion. There are also a few new keyboard shortcuts to make flipping through an ebook even easier and for switching between tabs in the user’s library.
