Google Chrome

This week, there’s a host of new software titles available for the first time, and it looks like it’s all things Google Chrome.

Most people are familiar with using the web-based version of Google Translate to try out a word or phrase, but this downloadable extension is so much more powerful (and useful) than that. With the extension installed, you have the option to right click on a word or phrase and choose to translate it, as well as have Google Chrome detect when a webpage you’re viewing isn’t in your language. It will then offer to translate the entire page for you in any combination of its 42 supported languages.

One thing I love about working with my phone nearby is the ability to be alerted to incoming emails without having to keep the window open so I can check it. But the Chrome extension Google Mail Checker does that right on your screen, alerting you to incoming emails while you work in a seamless, unobtrusive way. It places a small icon next to the address bar at the top of your screen and indicates a new message. Just remember that it doesn’t work on multiple Gmail accounts, so you’ll need to be selective about which one notifies you.

One other great free extension for Chrome that is sure to streamline things for users is the Google Calendar extension. This download places an out-of-the-way icon in the right corner of your screen, which then lets you click the icon to have your calendar pop up. It’s a handy way to keep your calendar available at all times without having to keep a tab or window open for it, no matter where you are on the web. It would be especially useful for times when you get an email telling you about a meeting or you find a website with a conference or program you want to participate in; just click your calendar extension and let it pop up to add the information without having to open the larger interface.

Other great new releases today include even more extensions for Chrome:
