The clock is ticking for owners of certain models of Kindle e-readers as the deadline to install a critical update is looming. Today’s deadline means owners who failed to follow through with the update will no longer be able to connect to the internet, and will have to install content (including this update) via a USB cable. This will include being unable to purchase new books or sync content (as in, retrieving a previously purchased book that they removed from their device; the book is still their purchased content but can’t be reloaded via the web command).

Kindle

This update includes all models through the 2012 Paperwhite 5th edition; the 6th edition and those since then do not need the update. If you’re not sure which generation or model device you have, consult the Amazon web page announcing this important update.

Depending on the model you have, there may be two different methods of installing the update. The first is for more recent models and it involves simply going to the settings and clicking to install the offered update, much like consumers are used to doing with a desktop computer, smartphone, or tablet. Older devices, though, didn’t remind users to update; these device owners will need to connect to the internet via their own connections and follow these steps:

“To sync your Kindle:

Kindle (1st Generation) –

  • Move the wireless switch on the back of your Kindle to the ON position.
  • From the Home screen of your Kindle, select Menu, and then choose Check for New Items.
  • Plug your Kindle in, and leave your Kindle plugged in and connected to its wireless network overnight.

Kindle (2nd Generation) or Kindle DX (2nd Generation) –

  • From the Home screen of your Kindle, press the Menu button.
  • Select Turn Wireless On with the 5-way controller.
  • Press the Menu button again and select Sync & Check for Items.
  • Plug your Kindle in, and leave your Kindle plugged in and connected to its wireless network overnight.”

Complete instructions and help can be found on the Amazon website dedicated to the news of this update. It is important to note that the Kindle Fire tablet is not affected by the update.
