Hacktivist group Anonymous turns attention to Donald Trump

If you’re reading this, the world didn’t end like some people feared. Yes, the US Presidential inauguration may have gone ahead as planned, but the Y2K-like predictions of planes falling from the sky did not. One group, however, has threatened to spend the next four years making sure everyone knows about the fallout.

Hacktivist group Anonymous has been oddly silent for the past year, barely coming out of the woodwork to address concerns over Russian hacking of the recent election. It could be that one of their number was facing the music for the Steubenville rape case that first put the group in the public eye; the sad outcome there is that the hacker responsible for bringing two rapists to justice is now facing more jail time than the sexual deviants received.

Now, however, something has stirred the proverbial pot for the group and they’ve all but declared war on President Trump. A series of tweets threatened The Don with everything from exposing child sex trafficking to misappropriation of funds, ending with the zinger that he will regret his decision to ever enter the political arena.

Interestingly, the group then went on to indicate that it was not their responsibility to take down the politician, but rather the people’s. The tweet storm went on to state that Anonymous had already provided the resources and that its followers had their work cut out for them if they wanted action. These resources are presumably the same tools that Anonymous made public when it was recruiting help in taking down ISIS by destroying the tens of thousands of Twitter accounts its members used to communicate following the Paris and Brussels bombings.

The next four years will undoubtedly be a time of angst and uncertainty for a lot of people around the world, and with proclamations such as this, it will be interesting as well. What remains to be seen is what the threats could possibly mean.
