Of course, all browsers can be considered ‘secure’, but there’s an ever-growing choice of specialised products that are specifically focused on the issue of user privacy, of handing back control to the user and opting out of the kind of data collection systems that underpin the likes of Google. All of which is music to the ears of many of us.

Tor
Tor has a well-earned reputation for online privacy and had a large and loyal fan-base. It uses a network of ‘hidden’ relay servers. Known as ‘onion routers’, they bounce traffic, helping to cover your tracks and maximise your privacy; while the user-friendly interface allows you to toggle it on and off, based on your need for online anonymity. It’s worth pointing out that Tor is a privacy browser not a secure environment and does not include anti-malware. However, The Tor Project offers a clear list of dos and don’ts for using it securely, which includes being very careful about downloading and opening any documents which require external apps. Built on top of a modified version of Firefox, Tor can be installed on a Windows, or Linux PC, Mac, or on a USB stick if that’s your thing. Tor Browser for Windows also lets you choose from various proxy tunnels based on a world map that displays exactly where each one is located.
