We review the latest update of Avast Free Antivirus – one of the most popular online security solutions available today.

Of course Avast Free Antivrus is popular – it’s free! And for most people, that’s probably enough to recommend it on its own. But it’s also really good. And that’s not just our opinion: look at any independent antivirus review for the last decade or so, and Avast finds itself consistently either at the top of the list, or so close to the top that there’s no real difference.

We re view Avast Free Antivirus 17.6 17.6.2310.

Avast Free Antivirus, 2017: Even works if you hold PlayStation 4 controllers…

The new boss – like the old boss – but lighter, faster, and with some neat new features

Installation and download is straightforward, and simple. The interface for Avast hasn’t changed much over the years. It’s simple, reliable, but packs a punch. For new users and people just wanting something that works, ‘Run Smart Scan,’ is the only thing you’ll really need. It scans all the major areas for malware, missing software updates, network issues, and even weak passwords, which is nice. As well as a raft of new features and improvements over last year’s effort, a welcome addition for version 17.6.2310 is more use of the ‘Cloud’ to assess threats and potential malware. Suspicious files are automatically sent for analysis in the cloud, and push a cure to all Avast users if it’s a threat. The result is that Avast uses less system resources and has a far lighter footprint than even the previous version.

Key features include:

  • Block viruses and other malware – Detect viruses, ransomware, and other threats in real-time.
  • Scan for Wi-Fi security weaknesses – Expose intruders and security weaknesses in your network.
  • Secure your passwords – Lock your passwords in our vault and log in to sites with 1 click.

Gamers Unite

The new ‘automatic’ Game Mode will be welcomes by gamers the world wide, we think, and it’s about time. Users no longer have to ‘silence’ Avast themselves, putting Windows and Avast notifications on hold, so there’s more system power and speed for your game.

The Avast Passwords is another nice touch. It is essence just another password manager, but it works, and is secure. Finally, there is the annual returning SafeZone Browser. Avast describe their browser as ‘the world’s most secure browser’ and we’re hardly about to argue with that. OK, so it might not be your automatic choice of browser, but it is a secure way to browse, bank, and shop, and comes with a suite of tools designed to keep us all safe from all the hackers and the malware lurking out there on the web.

Supports Windows XP

Great news for all you die-hard fans, Avast also still works with all versions of Windows, going all the way back to Windows XP – as long you have Service Pack 3 installed.

Conclusions

Avast Free Antivirus is a consistently highly-rated antivirus program with a whole bunch of additional tools and addons that will serve you well. And of course, it’s free!
