Is $249 the Right Price for the New Samsung Chromebook?
Software Reviews November 29, 2012 Annie
The new Samsung Chromebook is at a lower price point than previous versions and is affordable for many budgets. Since it focuses on web applications rather than programs that are stored locally, it can be more portable. The fact that it allows you to do more offline than previous versions of the programs will appeal to more users.
The Design
The fact that the Samsung Chromebook is light and thin makes it easier to carry around and will appeal to more people. It also has a decent display at 1366 x 768 and works well with browsing the web, reading emails, and working with documents.
The Chromebook includes a web cam and microphone, along with a headphone jack and SD card slot. You also get multiple USB slots and an HDMI port for connectivity. This model has Wi-Fi capabilities but a 3G version will be available later on.
How It Works
The Samsung Chromebook uses the Chrome OS and has a keyboard unique to all of the models. The trackpad works with one and two fingers for multiple optiosn. When you swipe with two fingers, you can scroll up or down, to the left or right on any page. One finger is a left click while two fingers means right click.
The Chromebook features an ARM processor, which does not use a fan and is completely quiet when it is running. It only takes about 10 seconds to power on and another five to be on the internet. It also works smoothly even if you have multiple windows open. It claims a battery life of 6.5 hours.
This computer is not for everyone. It is a great device if you don’t need local storage and it avoids many of the issues of traditional PCs such as viruses and software or OS updates. Both the OS and software programs have automatic updates working in the background so you don’t even know they are there. If you are a multi-tasker who has a lot of windows open or uses your computer continuously, you may prefer a hardier product like the Samsung Chromebook 550. However, this product is ideal for normal family use or as a second computer with the right selling price.
