The Barnes & Noble Nook has teamed up with mobile payment provider Fortumo to offer in-app purchases. Under terms of the deal app and game developers will be allowed to sell their digital products through the NOOK Store with the new feature enabled.
The new platform will go live in the “coming weeks” and will provide thousands of digital content titles including some of the most popular Android offerings.
In-app purchases will be available for both the 7-inch NOOK HD and the 9-inch NOOK HD+.
In announcing the new program Barnes & Noble writes:
“We are thrilled to bring in-app purchasing to NOOK with Fortumo for our community of developers so they can foster a profitable relationship with their customers, while also providing our NOOK customers with a more in-depth app experience and an even wider selection of popular apps.”

The program works by allowing customers to register their payment source with Fortumo, then logging that information with their Barnes & Noble Nook. When a customer wants to buy an in-app purchase they simply hit the “Pay” button and the purchase is completed in seconds. Because a customers info is stored with Fortuma there is no need to enter credit card or other payment issue before each purchase.
According to Claudia Romanini, VP of NOOK Apps, NOOK Media, LLC.:
“We are thrilled to bring in-app purchasing to NOOK with Fortumo for our community of developers so they can foster a profitable relationship with their customers, while also providing our NOOK customers with a more in-depth app experience and an even wider selection of popular apps. We look forward to adding thousands of more apps that feature in-app purchasing over the coming weeks and months to expand NOOK’s already wide array of digital content offerings.”
From popular mobile games to educational materials and productivity apps, the Barnes & Noble Nook offers something for everyone and now it offers those options with the ability to expand even more into the premium app space.
