Microsoft Launches Project Spark

Project Spark is ideal for gamers which don’t automatically need to have programming skills in order to create games. The tool itself is based upon Kodu, a visual programming language, which the tech giant has customized and adapted to enable budding developers to earn rewards and unlock achievements by Microsoft for learning how to program as they go.

VentureBeat noted that it is interesting that Microsoft has selected this time period to launch Project Spark, given that their recent acquisition of Mojang (for Minecraft).  It essentially lets gamers create user-generated content as well, but possibly the types of games and the audiences using them will be different.
