Angry IP Scanner
The brilliantly named Angry IP Scanner is an open-source and cross-platform network scanner designed to be fast and simple to use. It scans IP addresses and ports and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. Lightweight, with no installation required, the app works by simply pinging each IP address to check if it’s alive, then optionally it resolves its host name, determines the MAC address, and scans ports. Plugin support also allows for the amount of gathered data about each host to be extended. In order to increase scanning speed, Angry IP Scanner uses a multi-threaded approach: a separate scanning thread is created for each scanned IP address. Scanning results can be saved to CSV, TXT, XML or IP-Port list files. Additional features include NetBIOS information (computer name, workgroup name, and currently logged in Windows user), favourite IP address ranges, web server detection, and customisable openers. And because it’s open source, anyone who can write Java code is able to create plugins and increase it functionality. We like!
