Tesco Mobile launches IMO S2 – a smartphone designed specifically for children

We all remember our first mobile phone. For many it wasn’t that flash and, for most of us, we were not that young when we had it.

However, Tesco Mobile is now launching a new smartphone that’s specifically designed for children. The IMO S2, with built-in Monqi technology, looks exactly like an adult phone, but comes with lots of protection capabilities.

The news comes as The Mirror describes having a first mobile phone as a ‘modern rite of passage’ for the youth of 2018.

So, as youngsters get their hands on mobile tech earlier than ever before, there are inevitable worries about cyber safety. That’s where Tesco Mobile and Monqi hope to come in, developing a phone that protects as well as entertains.

How can the IMO S2 protect children?

It will allow children to safely browse the internet, without ever coming across content intended for those over 12. More than 1,500 pre-approved apps on the Jungle Store can be downloaded through mobile data or WiFi with no adverts or in-app purchases.

Its partner app can also block calls, texts, apps or data usage during scheduled times or at specific locations too. This has been done to limit screen time and any chance of mobile phone addiction. This feature allows the phone to be locked or blocked remotely, so parents are always in control.

A dedicated contacts app also controls who the phone can connect with. It requires parental approval before new contacts can be added.

How is Tesco Mobile describing the app?

Tesco Mobile has published a lot of early information about the phone on its website. It is claimed that the exclusive product will be ‘incredibly safe’ to use and that children will fall in love with it.

“It gives you full parental control and complete peace of mind,” read their description.

“If they don’t have one already, then your child is probably desperate to have a smartphone. But you might be worried about keeping them safe while they’re using it.

“The IMO S2 with Monqi is designed to be incredibly safe for children. So you can be sure they’re fully protected and they can start learning digital skills without you having to worry.”

Tesco add that the IMO S2 with Monqi is designed and performs just like any adult mobile phone. Therefore the giant brand is confident children will ‘love it’, but primarily it’s designed with safety in mind.

‘The best phone for both children and parents’

How much will it cost?

The IMO S2 with Monqi isn’t too pricey. It’s currently available in-store and online, both on pay monthly or pay as you go deals.

At the time of typing a 24-month contract can be purchased for £12 per month, with 250 minutes, 5,000 texts, 500MB of data and the free lifetime Monqi subscription. The phone will also be available on pay as you go for £99 when purchased with £10 credit.
