Firefox 142 brings improved Tab Groups, Tracking Protection

Mozilla released the Firefox 142 update this week improving the way Tab Groups, and Tracking Protection work.

Firefox 142 brings improved Tab Groups, Tracking Protection

Firefox 142 keeps the active tab visible in a Tab Group, even when you collapse the group. It will hide the other tabs in the group. The browser also displays a badge next to it, to indicate the number of hidden tabs in a group.

Firefox’s Tracking Protection is a useful security feature that blocks some forms of tracking, and even speed up page loading times. However, sometimes it may also cause the website to not render properly. To fix this, users may need to manually change the Tracking Protection level or disable it. Mozilla wants to simplify this process, and has introduced a new option that will allow Firefox to automatically apply exceptions required to avoid major website breakage.

PWAs are now available in Firefox 142, but only for Windows users. The experimental feature can be enabled from Firefox Labs, which lets users pin their favorite websites to the taskbar.

Firefox 142 also brings a change to the new tab page experience. For users in the U.S., article recommendations will be displayed on the new tab page. This is essentially a news feed that is grouped into sections like Sports, Food, and Entertainment. Users can follow topics that they are interested in, and block those that they don’t like. Several users have voiced their concern, saying that this news feed feels like ads. It is worth noting that the feature can be disabled quite easily.

Apple TV+ price increased by $3

The price of Apple TV+ subscription has gone up by $3. This is the third time that Apple has hiked the price of its streaming service since its debut in 2019. It received a price adjustment in 2022, then again in 2023, and once again now.

Apple TV+ price increased by $3

Previously, a month’s subscription of Apple TV+ costed $9.99. Now the same plan carries a $12.99 price tag, up by 30%. The Cupertino company defended its decision by pointing out that its streaming service is ad-free.

But is that a good idea? Rival services like Netflix, Peacock, Disney+, all offer an ad-supported plan for much cheaper. This not only helps gain more users, but also makes it affordable for many people. Apple TV+ may just be too expensive now for a lot of users. Currently, the price change applies to users in the U.S., and select international markets.

Microsoft Store is removing the option to disable auto-updates

The Microsoft Store will not let you disable auto-updates for apps anymore. Previously, users could toggle a setting in the Store app, and trigger updates manually for the apps they wanted to update. Now, with the option gone, users have no say when the app gets updated, except to postpone updates for a short time.

Microsoft Store is removing the option to disable auto-updates

The Microsoft Store app will let you pause updates for up to 5 weeks, you can choose between 1 and 5 weeks. It’s not clear why the Redmond company made this change, but it is likely due to security reasons, i.e. by forcing users to update apps, it can minimize the risks of security vulnerabilities. However, this may come at a cost. Sometimes apps remove features, or updated with a design that users may not like, or even get sold and become infested with in-app purchases.

Password managers have been found vulnerable to zero-day clickjacking exploit

A Czech Republic-based security researcher has discovered that many password managers are vulnerable to a clickjacking exploit. Marek Tóth, the person who unearthed the flaws, says that browser extensions of password managers are prone to clickjacking attacks which are iframe-based and DOM-based. Cross-site scripting (XSS) in websites, subdomain takeover, web cache poisoning, etc. may also result in clickjacking attacks. This could result in theft of credit card details, name, email address, phone, username, password, TOTP (2FA), and passkeys.

The exploit was tested by the security researcher in the following password managers: 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Enpass, iCloud Passwords, Keeper, LastPass, LogMeOnce, NordPass, ProtonPass, and RoboForm. Of these, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Keeper, Nordpass, Protonpass and Roboform have fixed the issues.
