Some people like it really small. Others like it ginormous. Whatever “it” is, there is always a market for the “just right” size, and the smartphone niche is no different. There are people who like phones that they can wrap their hands around. There are those who yearn for as much screen real estate as possible. But there are those who just want something that fits snugly in the hand.
And that’s what Motorola is banking on, so it seems. Sascha Segan has spilled the beans, thanks to information from Motorola design chief Jim Wicks. Segan peppers his article detailing some of Motorola’s plans with quotes from Wicks, the highlight (at least in my opinion) being:
“Certain people like a large screen, but there’s a sweet spot for consumers that we’re currently exceeding in the market. There are some people that like a big display, but there’s also a lot of people that want something that’s just about right. I think ‘just right’ is important, and we’re designing so we don’t disappoint those people.”
The idea is to make a smartphones that are better, not necessarily bigger. Take that, phablet makers!
Seriously, though, while Motorola may not be the first brand to come to mind when thinking about “wantable” mobile phones, one cannot deny that the company has had its own successes. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t mind the design of the original Razr. And with Google having bought Motorola (because of patents they say), the prospects are looking good.
Along with making phones that are sized “just right”, Motorola is also looking at expanding its distribution channels. One of the reasons pinpointed for Motorola phones not being more popular is its carrier-limited model. According to Wicks, we are going to see more carriers offering Motorola phones, Razr or not.
While this may not be enough to propel Motorola to the top, it does give erstwhile fans of the brand an option to look forward to.
