Billions of searches are done on Google every single day. Do you still remember life without having access to information with a few taps on your keyboard? Probably, but that scenario might make you uncomfortable – understandably. Every year, Google compiles the most popular searches done on the site, and I don’t know about you, but I like seeing what the trends are.

Most popular searches of 2012

This year, Google states that 1.2 trillion searches have been done using 146 languages. That’s an astounding number of searches!

Here are the most popular searches of 2012 on Google.

  • Whitney Houston
  • Gangnam Style
  • Hurricane Sandy
  • iPad 3
  • Diablo 3
  • Kate Middleton
  • Olympics 2012
  • Amanda Todd
  • Michael Clarke Duncan
  • BBB12
What does that tell us? That we humans still have a fixation on the death of people we deem noteworthy. There’s also the fact that number 2 in the list is a huge, if temporary trend. We get easily caught up in what the majority thinks is in, maybe?
The iPad 3 is the only gadget in this list. Apple doubters, do you still doubt?

Movies are still perhaps the best way we find some sort of escape from reality. Here are the most popular searches of 2012 in the movie category.

  • The Hunger Games
  • Skyfall
  • Prometheus
  • The Avengers
  • Magic Mike
  • John Carter
  • Ek Tha Tiger
  • Paranormal Activity 4

How many did you search for? How many have you seen?

Consumer Electronics

We, of course, cannot overlook the most popular searches of 2012 in terms of electronics. After all, these devices are part and parcel of modern life.

  • iPad 3
  • Samsung Galaxy S3
  • iPad Mini
  • Nexus 7
  • Galaxy Note 2
  • Play Station
  • iPad 4
  • Microsoft Surface
  • Kindle Fire
  • Nokia Lumia 920
What is surprising about this list? I don’t see an iPhone! It does look like Apple and Samsung draw a tie in this category.

Then there’s video.

  • Gangnam Style
  • Somebody That I Used to Know by Walk off the Earth
  • KONY 2012
  • Call Me Maybe featuring Justin Bieber
  • Obama vs. Romney Epic Rap Battles of History
  • A Dramatic Suprise on a Quiet Square
  • Why You Asking All Them Questions?
  • Crystallize by Lindsey Stirling
  • Facebook Parenting: For the Troubled Teen
  • Felix Baumgartner’s Supersonic Free Fall
No surprise there – with Gangnam Style. It is interesting to see how eclectic this mix is, though. Are you like me in realizing that I have missed some potentially worthwhile videos? No, I am not talking about Justin Bieber.
