Emma Thompson Goes Off On Social Media in Interview

Emma Thompson is a lot of things – an actress, an Oscar winner, an author – but fan of social media she is not. In fact, to say she seems to hate it would be putting it mildly. In a day and age where many (if not most) celebrities have a huge social media presence, Thompson stands apart from the pack and wants absolutely nothing to do with it.

In fact, she’s been quite vocal about her feelings regarding the phenomenon. She recently gave an interview to Vanity Fair where she let it all out there. During the interview, the star of Saving Mr. Banks and Nanny McPhee compared Googling herself to putting her head in the toilet (actually, she thought the toilet would be a more productive use of her time), and called those who use social media as part of a “lemming generation”.

She also had this to say regarding everyone’s love of all things social media:

“That’s not my scene at all…. God knows what it’s all doing to us. I hope that everyone does realize that we are all just one giant human experiment at the moment. We are just a great big bunch of little gerbils on wheels.”

As I stated earlier, it really is a rare occurrence for a celebrity with the star-power of Emma Thompson to just come right out and bash all forms of social media. Honestly, it’s a little refreshing to hear someone who’s willing to go a little bit against the grain and stand apart from the crowd.
