Who hasn’t dreamed about going to the moon? Ever since Neil Armstrong and his Apollo team stepped foot there in the 1960’s, most all of us, at one time or another, have fantasized about retracing their steps. We’ve longed to echo the famous words, “That’s one small step for man…one giant leap for mankind…” And who hasn’t wanted to bring back a moon rock to show off to everyone they know?
While most everyone thinks about going to the moon at some point, few people actually plan to go there or to have anything to do with the moon. Mikael Genberg, an artist, is one of those few people. However, he doesn’t want to go to the moon (not yet anyway) – he just wants to build a little red house on its surface. (Apparently it’s in need of some color). And with his plan, he wouldn’t even have to hire a construction crew to build it – it would build/inflate itself with a little bit of help from some gas.
Sure, Let’s Build A Neighborhood On The Moon
Genberg hopes to have this house on the moon by the year 2015. There’s a couple of problems with his plan, though – one, the house itself is only 75% designed, and two, it’s really expensive to fly a house to the moon. He is working with Astrobotic Technology out of Pittsburgh to try and make his dream come true, but it’s not cheap. That’s why he’s trying to raise money through crowdfunding. To be more exact, he’s trying to raise $15,000,000 (yes, $15 million) and the campaign has 179 days to go. As of this writing, he has raised $4,852.
I’m not too sure what the overall point of a red house with no one living in it on the moon would be, but to each their own I guess. Something tells me $15,000,000 might not be raised in time, but I have been wrong before. You can learn more about the Moon House here.
