Security Checklist for Smartphones from the FCC

The FCC has created a website to help users make their smartphones safer. This allows users to feel more secure about what they do on their phones and to find ways to protect their private data.
The website lists multiple operating systems along with general actions for any device. They kept it to just 10 items so that it would not be too overwhelming.
More people own smartphones today; in fact, one out of every two cell phone owners has one. Threats to smartphones from viruses and hackers have increased dramatically in just the last year.
Will it Work?
This list will work for people who are aware of the need for security but do not know how to go about the process. Many of the tips are simple, such as using PINs and passwords, being careful when you install apps, and backing up data. It also talks about accepting updates to the operating system and patches for the software.
Experts say that the more media attention that is given to threats to mobile security, the more people will take notice and do something about it.
The FCC says that hackers are turning their attention to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets because this is where people are spending their time. With the increase in use of mobile devices to handle banking transactions, make purchases, and do other online businesses, this is a prime focal point for those with the wrong intentions. Hackers realize that most people don’t secure their smartphones, which makes them an easy target.
The goal of the FCC with the website is to show people the need for security and how to begin implementing those changes. It’s much better to plan ahead than to try and undo the damage afterwards. To learn more about how to protect yourself with your smartphone, check out the FCC website.
