Do you know that feeling when you reach into your pocket and you can’t find your keys? It’s horrible isn’t it?  Well with new service KeyMe, launched this week in New York, it seems we have found a solution to that problem, by storing your keys in the cloud and making them accessible via a kiosk 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are currently two locations in Manhattan with three more on the way. No word on when they plan to expand outside of New York though.

What makes KeyMe unique is that it stores digital copies of your keys in the cloud and make them available wherever there’s a KeyMe kiosk nearby. Only a small amount of your own personal information is stored and your account can only be accessed with a fingerprint recognition scan.  A few other security measures are also said to be in place such as: in the event that there is some activity going on with your account, KeyMe will send you an email letting you know that your account has been accessed.

The cost?

A digital copy of your keys are stored for free and you’re only charged when you need to get a key made, which costs $20. To create a duplicate key on the spot, you’ll have to spend $3.50 for a basic brass key. Novelty keys, like a bottle opener key or sports team themed ones, will cost more at $6.

I thought about this and realised, if I lose my keys, there are a lot more than my house keys and office keys on my keychain.  I also have, probably not wisely I may add, my car key on there. So my question is, can you scan and replace a car key? Looking at the company’s FAQ section it appears not, as they say “The KeyMe Kiosk copies most home and office keys only”. Ah well, I can get into my house at least, but to walk there may be a really long way!

This looks like an interesting concept and may catch on.  What do you think?
