When I was a little girl, I used to imagine that I was Ariel from Disney’s The Little Mermaid. I may regret admitting that to you all but what I really  wanted was to be able to swim and breathe underwater without the assistance of any heavy equipment. I couldn’t help be excited when I saw the device named Triton.

Produced by a South Korean designer Jeabyun Yeon, Triton is a mask that acts like a fish gill, extracting oxygen from the water so the user can continue to breathe underwater. Yeon hopes that this will change how people feel about water.

There are two arms which come out from the side of the mask; it is these that act like gills, delivering oxygen. The arms have a scaly look that conceal small holes where water is sucked in as the swimmer takes a breath. Inside there are chambers which separate the oxygen and then release the liquid. The user bites down on the plastic mouthpiece to keep Triton in place.

It is all powered by a micro battery that can charge up to 1,000 times quicker than a normal battery.

Yeon hopes that one day this product will replace the complicated and bulky equipment needed for scuba diving. However for now Triton is still in the concept stage so is not yet available for order.
