Currently Google Fiber is the fastest broadband internet provider in the US, with connection speeds of 1Gbps. Yet Patrick Pichette, Chocolate Factory’s chief financial officer, has predicted that the speed could increase by up to ten times and it will reach consumers sooner than we all think.

During the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference, Pichette explained that Google is in the process of developing the necessary equipment to provide 10Gbps of data for domestic and commercial users.

“That’s where the world is going. It’s going to happen,” Pichette said, USA Today reports. “Why wouldn’t we make it available in three years? That’s what we’re working on. There’s no need to wait,” he added.

Pichette explained how important it is to Google to provide a faster broadband; the more people that use the internet, then the more business for the tech company. He also expressed how cloud services could be improved if bandwidth lag was done away with.

When Google announced that it was branching out as an internet service provider, most of the major network providers mocked the decision, yet it has made a difference. The first commercial installation was in Kansas City, Missouri following a large public demand. Austin, Texas is the next stop for Google, while it also spends $18 million on tracking network cables in Provo, Utah with th aim of getting them working faster too. Google is obviously not just playing around here.

Originally the plan was that this project would be rolled out in the next ten years but it is clear that Google want this up and running  quicker than expected. During the conference Pichette was asked whether Google had any more roll-out plans for fiber. “Stay tuned,” he replied.
