Sony has announced the next iteration in the Xperia line, the Z3, Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact and two new wearables, the Smartwatch 3 and SmartBand Talk. All of this was announced at IFA 2014, alongside Samsung’s big announcements.
Xperia Z3
The Xperia Z3 is Sony’s new flagship, at least for the next six months. The smartphone continues the same design language as the Z2, but inside the internals have been upgraded, to include a 2.5GHz Snapdragon processor, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of storage (with microSD expansion) and a 3100mAh battery.
Sony has kept the 20.7MP rear camera and 5.2-inch 1080p TRILUMINOS display, the camera is still top of the line, but the display could’ve been QHD, like most of the new high-end smartphones coming out. Android KitKat 4.4.4 will run on the Xperia Z3, under Sony’s custom OS skin.
The Xperia Z3 will come in black, white, green and copper. It should be released this Fall.
Xperia Z3 Compact
The Xperia Z3 Compact is the successor to the Z2 Compact, one of the best “mini-phones” on Android. The Z3 Compact continues this trend, even though it has 2GB of RAM instead of 3GB and 2400mAh battery, it is still a great contender, due to its 4.6-inch size.
For most people, 5.2-inch is still a bit too big for their tastes – offering the Xperia Z3 Compact with basically the same internals and a smaller screen is a good deal, especially if it is a touch cheaper. This will also launch in the Fall.
Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is Sony’s first shot at that sweet spot between 7 and 10 inches, where Apple could resides with the iPad Mini. The tablet carries over the same specs as the Xperia Z3, but without the 20.7MP rear shooter, Sony has replaced this with an 8MP camera.
This is the first time Sony has delved in the 8-inch market, we should see this around the same time as the two smartphones.
