The press release also indicated the NYPD is planning to use the fingerprint scanners on their new device in the future “It is expected that further functionality will be added to the mobile platform next year, including the integration of fingerprint scanning to support in-field identity checks.”

The tablets that they are planning to deploy are Panasonic Toughbooks, which are running Windows OS, if what was seen is to be believed, as de Blasio was holding one up at the press conference last week.

Also at the press event, the NYPD showed off a variety of mobile devices, revealing multiple Windows devices, including a Lumia phone.

At the moment, Windows Phone currently does not have any devices with a fingerprint scanner. This does not mean however that it will not happen. Code has been discovered that indicates the platform will likely gain the feature soon enough. This corroborates with the information given by the NYPD stating that fingerprint checks will be added “next year.”
