Microsoft downgrades Windows Media Player Legacy by removing features

It appears that Microsoft has made some bizzare changes to the Windows Media Player Legacy app. Reports indicate that recent experimental versions of the classic app have removed certain features. This includes the ability to enable lyrics, captions and subtitles.

Microsoft downgrades Windows Media Player Legacy by removing features

When a user tries to enable said features, the app will redirect them to use the newer Windows Media Player instead. Users have criticized the decision to deprecate useful features, while pointing out that the classic app is faster and more performance friendly as opposed to the newer version that Microsoft wants people to switch over to.

This is not the first time that the Redmond company has forcefully retired classic apps on Windows 11. It did so with the New Outlook app that replaced Windows Mail and Calendar/ Classic Outlook, the new Teams app, Skype, and even killed Internet Explorer in favor of Microsoft Edge.

Apple TV and Apple One prices hiked

A couple of months ago, Apple had announced a price increase for its hardware products. Now, it has increased the prices of Apple One and Apple TV subscriptions.

Apple TV price hiked

Variety reports that Apple TV subscribers will now need to pay $14.99 per month, which has gone up by $2 from the previous price of $12.99. Users who opt for an annual subscription will have to fork over $119, up from $99.

The Cupertino company has increased the prices of the subscription no less than four times in the past in as many years, the previous price hike came in August in 2025. That’s not all, Apple has also increased the price of Apple One, which bundles Apple TV, Apple Music and iCloud+. It now costs $21.95 per month, up from $19.95.

Apple’s strategy isn’t unique, it follows similar price adjustments that were made by Netflix, Disney+, YouTube Premium, HBO Max, Paramount+, and Peacock. On the bright side, Apple TV is the only streaming service that is devoid of advertisements, and also happens to be the most affordable one in the U.S.

Chrome Web Store has hundreds of fake VPN extensions

Malware on the Chrome Web Store isn’t exactly something new, the problem has existed for years. Now, security researchers at Socket have unearthed a malicious campaign that is targeting a specific category of add-ons. The Chrome Web Store is infested with fake VPNs that are masquerading as legitimate ones. It’s not just two or three extensions, the researchers discovered over 40 developer accounts that were used to upload 737 malicious VPN extensions on the Chrome Web Store.

274 of these extensions were impersonating real brands such as Proton VPN, NordVPN, Surfshark to name a few. A total of 66 brands were affected by this campaign. Users who didn’t pay attention to the fake add-ons may have believed they were installing the real one, this is malvertising. And unfortunately, it was successful, and managed to trick over 75,000 users into installing the malicious extension on their devices. It appears that the target were Russian-speaking users who wanted to bypass blocked services such as Instagram, ChatGPT, YouTube.

Once the add-ons were installed, the malware routed the user’s browser session via a SOCKS5 proxy managed by the attacker, allowing them to spy on the user. It also tricked users into subscribing to access premium server locations that didn’t exist. The researchers stated that the developers of the fake extensions managed to trick the Stores review-system, to submit false user reviews that endorsed their extensions, thus reassuring the unaware user they were installing a good extension.

It’s a good idea to only install VPN extensions that are linked on the official websites of VPN services, the same goes for password manager extensions as well. This greatly reduces the chances of installing extensions that contain malware.
