Metallica Making A Comeback Via Cassette Tape

I don’t know if anyone’s bothered to tell Metallica that we’re not in the ’80s anymore, but they’ve recently announced they’ll be releasing some new (old) material on April 18th of this year, and the biggest surprise of all, they’ll be releasing the music on cassette tape. (Those are what came before CDs, for any young folks who might be reading this). The cassette tape will be a limited edition demo recording from way back in 1982, and it will be the first time the metal band has officially released any of their demos. This release will just be the first in a long line of reissues/first time releases, the band claims.

I have to ask – does anyone out there even still have a cassette player, let alone any cassette tapes? If not, when was the last time you used one? I honestly can’t even remember, but my best guess would be when I had a Walkman way back in high school, before I moved on to a personal CD player. Another question – do a lot of people still listen regularly to Metallica? I’ll admit I was a fan back in the day, but they really haven’t done all that much since their last studio album Death Magnetic was released back in 2008. (Yes, I’m aware they made a concert film and played a show in Antartica).

For those without cassette players, which I’m guessing is the great majority of us, this demo release will also be released on CD and vinyl format sometime this summer. The release will include songs such as Hit the Lights and Metal Militia.

What do you think? Do you find it as crazy as I do? (I guess if an ’80s band is trying to make a comeback, cassette tapes are the way to go! At least they’ll stand out among today’s other selections).
