Ever since news was released about the new Harry Potter mobile game, millions of muggles have been wishing they could simply shout ‘Accio’ and conjure up a time-turner.
The wait is now over though, as Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is released today. The augmented reality mobile game, themed after JK Rowling’s boy wizard, launched in the US and UK on Friday June 21.
Created by Niantic, the team behind Pokémon Go, Wizards Unite will no doubt see A LOT of downloads today. Although it is understood that other regions will have to wait a little longer for the release.
Essentially, players will be able to virtually immerse themselves in the magical world of Harry Potter, in the same way Pokémon Go did with much success. You will be able to see the real world through your smartphone lens, but with added magical features overlaid.
What’s the aim Harry Potter: Wizards Unite?
Harry Potter played (and still does play) a huge part in the childhoods of many. As well as the books, the Warner Bros films grossed more than £5.9billion at the box office.
We must have all desperately waited for our Hogwarts letter, alas to no avail. But now that doesn’t matter, thanks to this new game even us non-wizarding-folk will be able to let out our inner Harry or Hermione.
Gameplay sees each player choose to become either a Magizoologist (best for tackling magical beasts), an Auror (best for defeating dark wizards and making spells) or a Professor (best at debilitating foes with ‘deep magical knowledge’).
After that you set off on your adventure, while strolling around the (now magical) world. While doing so you will encounter iconic characters and beasts. While Pokémon Go has Gyms, Wizards Unite will have Fortresses. This is where players can team up with other players.

Don’t worry, you won’t just be adventuring around the muggle world. Portkeys will be installed which take you to well-known destinations, such as; Dumbledore’s Office and Ollivanders Wand Shop.
What’s different to Pokemon Go, however, is the fact all players will be on the same side. The aim is to work together, as part of the ‘Statue of Secrecy Task Force’. Together you will search for and deal with dangerous items hidden around the world.
How do I play?
Although EE is the exclusive partner in the UK for the game it doesn’t mean people on other networks can’t play. All it means is EE customers will get access to some exclusive content.
Like every mobile game you will be able to download it at your app store of choice. The Google Play Store even had pre-register scheme for excited Potter fans.
