Drones For Moviemaking Approved By FAA

In a huge step forward for the commercial use of drones, the FAA has approved their use by six of Hollywood’s movie and television production companies. While there are some strict limitations as to their use, drones will be able to legally be used to film shots for movies and television shows. It seems the use of drones is becoming more and more common and accepted, as Techbeat even reported last week about DHL using drones to transport medical supplies to a small island near Germany. Obviously the use of drones for filming gives filmmakers a whole new realm of possibilities when it comes to getting the perfect scene.

As far as the limitations go, the drones won’t be able to film at night, they won’t be allowed to fly more higher than an altitude of 400 feet, they can’t fly longer than 30 minutes at a time, and they must always be used in a restricted area. And, while not very surprising, they won’t be able to be used for reality television shows or for non-scripted events, i.e. live television. Even with all of the restrictions, though, these developments show great promise for the film industry.
