That new iPhone 5s is a pretty nifty piece of kit by any stretch of the imagination, but it is an expensive one, especially if you are not due for an upgrade.
If the $600+ price tag is more than your finances can feasibly cope with, how about getting one of the new camera features from the 5s for the very low price of just $1.99? That’s all you have to pay to get SlowCam on your iPhone 5.
This app brings the super-smooth slow motion video capture from the iPhone 5s to Apple’s previous model, and it even adds some functionality to the 5s. This app can behave like a standard video recording app, but that is not really why you are going to be using it.
At any point in time you can press and hold the Slow Motion button right above the record button. The device immediately then starts recording additional frames for slow motion video, but the number of frames per second will depend, unfortunately, on your device.
The iPhone 5s can record 120 fps, making this a decent replacement for Apple’s stock camera application in that respect. The iPhone 5 can pull down 60 fps, but the iPhone 4 and 4s can only reach 30 fps. SlowCam outputs video at 30 fps in the Camera Roll, so video on the 5s will look great and still very good on the iPhone 5. The older devices were already recording at 30 fps, so it’s not really slowed down at all. The developer probably should not be offering the app on those devices at all, in my opinion.
SlowCam requires a few seconds to process the slow motion video before it can be viewed, but this can be accomplished in the background while you take more slow-mo footage. After processing, SlowCam also allows users to share those slow motion videos directly to Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Apple‘s default camera app actually saves the files at 120 fps, which many services will not accept. So, SlowCam is handy in that respect as well and worth $1.99 if you’re using an iPhone 5 or 5s.
