When Microsoft held its Windows 10 event last week at its headquarters in Washington, no one was expecting a new futuristic wearable device. The tech company astounded everyone with the announcement about HoloLens, Microsoft’s sleek-looking headset, complete with transparent lenses. It really does look like something straight out of a science fiction film but what does it actually do and is it something that is going to used by the masses? Microsoft clearly thinks so and sees a future where people are able to see interactive, 3D images on top of what they already see in everyday, real life situations. Such an advanced piece of technology has numerous uses, both professionally and at home too. Imagine taking a walk around your unfinished house and seeing where the new walls are going to be. You could pull a virtual engine out of a real car so that you can take a look at how it works and fits together.

HoloLens can be used to video chat with someone on Skype for example. Accessing the device's camera, they could then see what you are looking at and give you directions on how to repair something, along with diagrams to guide you through each step. When you start to consider these uses, then you realise how valuable this kit could be in training pilots or even doctors in complex surgical procedures.
