True to form, Sony has been keeping a tight lid on the details on the upcoming PlayStation 4. We have received  rivulets of information regarding the specs and the probability of Sony releasing their console after Microsoft does, but that’s about it really. Speculation is always rife when it comes to Sony’s gaming consoles, and the PlayStation 4 is no exception. Just like a thirsty traveler in the middle of the desert, we longingly wait for the trickling down of info…

PlayStation 4

And early this month, we got the treat that we’ve been waiting for! This time, it’s about the PlayStation 4 price point.

Rumor has it that we’re going to see the new gaming console somewhere at the $350 to $400 range! That kind of detail, one does not easily let go. The source of this rumor is an analyst Colin Sebastian (Baird Equity Research). His reasoning?

His sources have purportedly shared that the new consoles (including Microsoft’s new Xbox) are “largely built from ‘off the shelf’ high-end PC components, along with hybrid physical/digital distribution models, enhanced voice controls and motion sensing, and broad multi-media capabilities.” Hence, the cost of production should be considerably lower, he says.

If it sounds too good to be true…

As exciting that tidbit is, I have to prick your bubble. Analysts may be privy to more information than the average consumer, but that does not mean they are always spot on with their predictions. And as much as we may want the rumor to be true, Japanese publication Asahi just gave us what may very well be the real deal.

Based on a report by Brian Ashcraft of Kotaku, the more likely scenario is that the PlayStation 4 price point will be over $400. In the Asahi report, it is said that the PlayStation 4 price point “is believed to be” more than 40,000 yen, about $427.

That’s not too far off of the $400 prediction, although $350 would have been a much sweeter number. Then again, think about how much you paid for the previous versions of the console. The original PS3 (60GB) cost a whopping $599, so I think even a $427 price tag for the PlayStation 4 is reasonable.

In the meantime, hold your breath till the 20th when the Sony press event is scheduled to take place.
